Professional insight with James Parry
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi everyone I recently decided to hold a writing competition for the players at DMS11. The subject; "Why is Soccer Special to you." I was delighted to discover some terrific entries. Here are a few of my favorites. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did. Well done to Javien, Zachary, Marco, Sean and Jake. HERE ARE THE CHOSEN ENTRIES "Playing soccer is special to me because I love soccer. Soccer is the best sport you can play. I like playing soccer because I like the feeling of hearing everyone cheer when I score a goal. My grandpa taught me how to play soccer. He really likes soccer too and he likes to watch me play. That is why soccer is special to me." Javien Cortes U11 Forward "It is fun to play soccer because my friends are on the team and it is fun to play with them. Another reason I like being on our team is that our coach is very nice and he helps us through stuff that is really, really hard. For example, After we had lost a game 2 to 7 he talked us through it and said what a great job we did. Zachary Flager U9 Goalkeeper
"Hey James, this is why soccer is special to me. Soccer is special to me for a few reasons. First there is the competition. It is great to have a challenge in every single game. I always feel tested in every game. Soccer tests my physical ability and my mental toughness. I learn something about how I play in every game. Soccer is also special to me because I like playing with my teammates. I feel my team is confident with the way I play. I respect my teammates and they respect me. We work well together and this is special. Soccer is special because I love to play it. I love to play goalie. I like to practice the sport and I really look forward to the games. Every game is a challenge and a fight. I always learn from my mistakes. Soccer is special to me because it is an old sport. Soccer is everywhere in the world. Everyone in world respects it. This is why soccer is special to me." Marco White U13 Goalkeeper "Dear James I enjoy playing soccer because it keeps me in shape and I enjoy a physical challenge. It toils with my body and brain. Soccer challenges me to give all of my focus and tests my vision, awareness, and effort. If I am willing to gain in understanding of the game, and by continuing to practice and attempting my best, I will improve and grow closer to the game. I also think it is a great way to interact with other people. I have also found, in my few short years of playing, that I have become more confident on and off the field. As you can see, soccer has affected me both on and off the field. I have played other sports and they just didn't have as big of an impact on me.That is why I enjoy playing soccer."

The reason I love soccer is because it teaches you about life. It shows you how to handle situations, good and bad. For instance, if from the beginning you go down 2-0 you have two options. The first option is that you could yell at your teammates and make them feel bad, or you could work to get them lifted up and try to come back. That situation happened on my bu11 team, it was the thousand oaks classic final tournament and by halftime we were down 2-0. At halftime Dan came and talked to our team he said the game wasn't over yet and what better way to win a final then coming back and winning 3-2. We started with a new attitude and came back and tied it up and scored in the final seconds of over time to win the final. The lesson I learned is to never give up in life and in soccer.
