GAME RESULTS
playoffs : game #2 - buckley - with passions running high and the spot in the elite eight up for grabs, the players and fans brought an extra pride of their community to the game. malibu started extremely well, and took the first 15 minutes to buckley. with a great cross and finish by douglas bogie, malibu looked well in control. however a dubious free kick, that even buckley thought was a throw in, lead to a crisp free kick by buckleys most effective player, and the ball was in the back of the malibu net. with the first half coming to an end a perfect cross was met by the precision heading of munny manak and we ended the second half 2-1 up. with buckly having a player dismissed, the game was presumed over and malibu relaxed after the half. however, credit to buckley and they fought like 12 players and had a number of chances to get back into the game. however, a cracking goal by jj saul and a final goal after the goalkeeper fumbled the ball, and malibu cruised home despite the valiant efforts of the buckley team who never ceased to try. kudos to them and tremendous excitement and worthy winners go to malibu. game #1 - laguna blanca - the boys played a very good controlled game of soccer. with buckley video taping the game in anticipation of their victory we played well within ourselves, but in no way disrespected the opponenets. it was a blustery day and the wind assisted our pressure on the goalkeeper as he had a hard time readin the shots we were taking. jj saul scored 2 goals and a powerful free kick by munny manak sealed the victory. player of the game for malibu was douglas bogie. lets see how the video taping helps buckley after their win too. GAME #1 - CALABASAS - THE BOYS PLAYED VERY WELL, DOMINATING LARGE PORTIONS OF THE GAME. CALABASAS HAD FAST FORWARDS THAT TESTED OUR DEFENSIVE SHAPE. GOING A GOAL DOWN FROM A VERY LONG HIGH FREEKICK COULD HAVE PUT US DOWN. HOWEVER, A GREAT GOAL BY REED KAPLAN GOT US LEVEL. THE CHARACTER OF THE TEAM SHOWED HOW WE NOT ONLY CAME BACK, BUT WERE PUSHING HARD FOR THE WINNER AT THE END. GAME #2 - SIMI VALLEY - WE SCORED IN THE 4TH MONUTE OF THE GAME, WITH AN AMAZING VOLLEY FROM MICHAEL GALATE. WE SHOULD HAVE HAD 3 GOALS IN THE FIRST 8 MINUTES AS SIMI WERE SHOCKED BY OUR START. TWO DEFENSIVE LAPSES ALLOWED SIMI TO TAKE THE LEAD AS THEY PUSHED HARD TO CONTROL THE GAME. SIMI FINISHED THE FIRST HALF STRONGER. IN THE SECOND HALF WE WERE UNDER PRESSURE FOR THE FIRST 10 MINTUES BUT DEFENDED STOUTLY. AS THE HALF WORE ON WE BEGAN TO CREATE CHANCES AND HIT THE POST AS WE MOUNTED THE COMEBACK. HOWEVER, THE FINAL WHISTLE CAME TOO SOON AND THE SIMI FANS CELEBRATED HOLDING ON AGAINST MALIBU. GAME#3 - CROSSROADS - THE BOYS PLAYED TREMENDOUSLY WELL IN THE FIRST HALF AS WE HAD POSSESSION OF THE GAME FOR LARGE AMOUNTS OF TIME. ANOTHER GREAT GOAL FROM MICHAEL GALATE AND A SECOND FROM NICK KATZ JUST BEFORE HALF TIME GAVE US THE 2 GOAL CUSHION WE DESERVED. THE SECOND HALF STARTED A LITTLE SLOWER FROM US BUT BEFORE WE KNEW IT THE REFEREE STOPPED THE GAME AFTER DISMISSING THE OTHER SIDELINE COACHES, NOT A GREAT DECISION FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE. GREAT PLAYING GAME BY THE BOYS THOUGH ON A VERY SMALL FIELD. GAME #4 - KILPATRICK - A beautiful day in Malibu as we hosted the Kilpatrick boys. The opposing team worked very hard to stop us playing, and had moments of creative work towards our goal. However, the Malibu team picked up their speed of play and began to control the game. At the half we had 2 goals on the board from Nick Katz and Cully Smoller, the second coming off a great cross from Milton Alvarado and Cully smashing the ball into the back of the net.In the second half the ball comr back off the corss bar as we pressed for the third goal, and Reed Kaplan and JJ Saul went for the same ball. As JJ went to kick the ball Reed charged in and headed the ball into the net. The Referee decided to give the opposing team a freekick for dangerous play against our own team mate for a high kick. A first for officiating we do not know to be a rule. Not our strongest performance as we sat in a comfort zone and lost a little intensity, but enough to continue our learning curve and realize the lessons of Champion teams that have to maintain a level of performance every game. A special mention to our best player of the day, Munny Manak, who expertly moved the ball to keep the flow of the game going. The Referee amazingly stopped the game with 13 minutes to go and just went home. We were left standing on the field with two teams, a ball but no officials. Another first in the life of a soccer team.. GAME #5 - MILKEN - In really windy conditions, and with a number of players missing, the Malibu players took to the task in hand against Milken with expert composure. With the advantage in the first half Milken tried their best to stop the flow of Malibu wind assisted attacks. However, JJ Saul was on fire and blasted 2 very definite shots past Milkens best player, the Keeper. The system employed worked wonders and before the half Douglas Bogie made a perfectly timed near post run and slotted the ball past the stationary Milken defense. Zev Taublieb got to make his debut on the Varsity after some great performances on the JV squad. Against the wind Malibu changed their tactics and created more chances to score than Milken. With the game comfortably won Malibu controlled possession of the game and walked away 3-0 winners. A mention of the fan support and the Malibu High Girls teams that showed up cheering and creating a fun atmosphere. It cannot be underestimated how great it is to have the community behind the team and appreciate all the parents, friends and Coaches that were at the game. The special moment may have been when Joe Hanson decided to show off his chesting ability to the delight of the spectators when he received a ball, flying at the speed of the howling wind and let out the Tarzan scream as he skilfully got in the way of the ball !! Well, kind of anyway. Great moment, great game, great team work and great atmosphere. Game #6 - Santa paula - wet. slippery and competitive. after some great training sessions the boys opende the game with excellent passing and movement, creating a number of early chances to score. missing 3 of our 4 forwards, the make shift lineup did a great job of working together and communicating to make up for the lack of experience in some positions. the game became a battle of staying on your feet as the rain poured down. santa paula, whom we had not beaten for 5 years, had a very strong team, and also worked the ball well. in the second half, Malibu finally socred the game winning goal through a great pass to agya salas, who fired a great shot into the far corner netting. our defense once again had a great game, with all 11 wrking hard to get goal side when under pressure. as the self described "stoopid solid" defense held strong, so did all the players making this win all about the team. great job 2007, now for 2008. Game #7 - villanova - A very soft ground and slippery conditions meant we were not able to control the ball as good as we can. having only had 1 practice since the holiday break we started with good patience and played some great soccer. malibu spent large quantities of tie in the villanova half, passing around the field with confidence and poise. after some wild shots we managed to put the ball in the net a couple of times within 5 minutes. jj saul and reed kaplan hit the first two, and then jj decided to wall pass off of the post to secure a 3-0 half time lead. munny manak played very well in the center of mid and kept the team flowing. jj saul completed his hat-trick with a finely placed header on an open goal, and then the game was finished with another goal to finish 5-0. a sympathy call gave villanova a penalty when two of their players ran into each other in our penalty area. this gave justin hale a chance to touch the ball, and he did it with excellence as he tipped a very good shot onto the cross bar, and then jumped up from the ground to retrieve the rebound. a great way to start 2008 and keep the winning streak of scheduled games to 5 wins with 5 shutouts. season to date is 5-1-1. great job mhs11 sharks. game #8 - santa clara - against a tough physical opponent the passing class and talent showed in the secind half. not the best performance, but the team are now beginning to learn the need to play at their own level all the time and not relax without the intensity a championship team needs to have. game #9 - villanova - on a very wet, slippery field, mhs took to their task quickly. in a game they pretty much dominated, the team again showed again a slight lack of intensity and played at a level under their best. the missed practices and games due to rain have slowed down our momentum and progression. however, the highlight cam with louis davis having his first varsity game, coming on for the ever reliable justin hale in goal. not touching the ball louis got called up to take the pk near the end of the game. his only touch for varsity, and louis scored with a power shot into the net. this was our second game in 2 days due to the rain out last week. goal of the game went to joe hanson, with a 30 yard dipping screamer. game #10 - grace brethern - actually played before the game above, we were very off. a quick goal in the second minute, and a quick second chance, then the team turned off the intensity. all credit to grace as they pushed as hard as they could and forced us into mistakes. a defensive mix up and a penalty meant mhs gae up their first and only goals of the high school season. the team then pulled players that were not working off the field and mhs started to play better with 9 v 11. another player was not working their hardest and mhs were down to 8 v 11. we went from a 3-2 lead to a final 7-2 win. this was a great point to the players that 8 workers are better than 11 with some unintense performances. the philosophy of the 11 bore out as we were playing below our power. note to mention was jj saul socring a brilliant individual goal dribbling the length of the field and rounding the keeper with 5 players beaten. game #11 - bishop diego - third game in 3 days, and the legs were a little weary. bishop diego showed up with a pride and anger to avenge the 5-0 drumming we gave them at their house. i believe the legs on the team were to play in our dominant play but inability to find that final commitment to score. bishop lost their best player to a head clash and we were missing the strength of reed and michael to sickness. bishop brought their best game, and even though we controlled the vast majority of the game, they defended with all they had. the game ended regulation time a tie, and two 5 minute overtimes were started. the boys, realizing their perfect season was on the line and should have finished the game earlier, started the overtime with a passion we had not witnessed the entire previous 85 minutes. within a minute and a half, a great pass over the far defender by munny manak let in jj saul, who lobbed the keeper. nick katz followed in to make sure the ball was over the line. Malibu continued to dominate and should have had more goals. tie played out with mhs on top. the best performance and energy today came from the awesome support we received on the sidelines from all the malibu families, friends and the girls mhs team. i hope they realize how important that is for the team, and as we head to the playoffs we hope they will continue to follow the team all the way to the end of the 2008 season. game #12 - santa clara - a beautiful day in malibu, sun shining and the boys ready to play. the warm up was buzzing and the players looked hungry to have the perfect season. santa clara looked prepared to stop us as they too warmed up with intensity. when the opening whistle blew, malibu kicked off and took just under 12 seconds to score their fastest goal of the season. jj saul scored from a great cross from josh buckton. from that point on the contest was over. santa clara worked extremely hard to close malibu down and got into scoring positions on a couple of counter attacks, but each threat was stamped out by the formidable" sick stupid" defence. the midfield was working overtime with dennis alvarado marshaling the defensive side, the outside creating attacks from both sides, and the atacking mids spraying the ball to our forwards, who were creating problems all over the opponents penalty area. half time was 4-0. second half was better played and although we only scored 2 more goals, the performance was more convincing if that was posssible. the crowd was great again, and the boys wrapped up a spectacular season as league champions. the team spirit is great and we are ready to work hard in preparation for the playoffs. well done malibu boys varsity - league champions - 100% record. JUNIOR VARSITY a great season - 100% record in league - champions
