Professional insight with James Parry

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey

I was fortunate enough to this week link up with a friend from back in the UK.
Jonny Sutherland currently plays in goal for Manchester United Academy U16's. He is one of the brightest soccer prospects in the UK, which has helped earn him the right to train with England's International Youth teams.

I must say that Jonny's answers/thoughts are very well thought out - some of the best footballing reflections I have heard recently.

Like me I'm sure you will all wish him every success in the near and long term future.

Hi James! Anything to help or inform others im happy doing bro!

Typically how many times do you train per week during the playing season?

As an U-16 Goalkeeper, I train 4 times a week. Monday and Wednesday afternoons, Thursday evenings, (game in Saturday) and Sunday morning. However in the U-17/U-18 season, which i will be in this summer, we train everyday apart from Sundays.

What do you enjoy most about playing soccer?

It has to be making important and great saves that help your team. Its also nice to get a bit of praise once in a while to keep yourself confident!

What qualities do you like outfield players around you to have?

I like my players (especially defenders) to be cool and calm on the ball. They also have to trust me as a keeper and listen to what information i give and then take it on board in the game. Its always a bonus to have a team full of confidence and willing players, who want to win.

Have you had any setbacks in your footballing life yet? And if so how did you deal with them?

Ive had many injuries through problems with growth, so i guess they could be seen as setbacks. i have never been released or been questioned due to my football ability so ive never had a major setback. However i can tell you that, when injured, it is 10 times as important to work as hard as you can so you can come back sharper.

What do you like to do away from soccer?

I enjoy my music! Im into most things and i think you James will understand my taste!!! I find it great to relax to it and reflect on my own life through it. Im also into other sports such as golf. I find it key to make time for friends and family away from football also.

Is there any information that you could pass on that may help a goalkeeper and defenders build a greater understanding and relationship on the field? Could be in matches or training.

I find that building a friendship is key to help perform in games. Knowing each other and the style of football they play is key to helping the rest of the team. Ive found its so much easier working with someone you know, and understand. So I would say, develop a bond and friendship on and off the field.

Where do you aim to be in 5 years time?

I will be 21 so hopefully playing 1st team for Manchester United and England! Im realistic in my ambitions. I would love to be playing 1st team football at a reasonably high club and making an impact on the International seen for the U-21's as either an English or Welsh Keeper.

Biggest influences on your career?

We would all like to be Schmeichel for obvious reasons! But comparitively to my own style of goalkeeping, i enjoy studying the likes of Shay Given, Cassillas, Jussi Jasskelainen and Pepe Reina. Not physically the biggest but they sure make up for it in ability!

Enjoyed answering these questions and hope it helped the DMS11 players in any way.

Jonny
